Tooth Extraction Dental extractions are one of the most common procedures in dentistry. They can be performed on a single tooth or as many as four teeth at the same time. Extractions are necessary for removing unhealthy, decayed, cracked, or broken teeth that cannot be saved due to disease or injury. At Highridge Dental Care, we are experts at tooth extractions. What Are Tooth Extractions And Why Do They Happen?Dental extractions are when teeth have become so infected or decayed that they must be removed, often with a surgical procedure. Sometimes patients are unaware of this, as the tooth may only harbor bacteria on its surface and does not present any symptoms to show decay or infection until much later in the process. A dental extraction is performed by inserting an instrument into the gum tissue around where the tooth needs to be pulled from, then removing it straight down slowly while wiggling back and forth slightly as necessary for best result. Then, a small hole will appear in your gums where you can see a bone called the alveolar crest. We will insert what looks like a metal hook (called an elevator) under this ridge of bone at one side of the tooth and lift it straight up, then turn it so that the hook catches the other side of this ridge. How To Prepare For A Tooth ExtractionWhat type of anesthetic will be used? You can discuss comfort and safety with the dentist during your consultation, but if you have any concerns, please contact us. We do not want you to feel any discomfort if possible. How much pain is involved after the procedure?Pain medication will most likely be prescribed; however, there's no way to predict exactly what kind of pain patients feel post-op because everyone has different levels of sensitivity in their mouth. It could range from mild soreness to severe throbbing or even sharp pains that make it hard to eat solid food. How long do you have to take the pain medication? You should plan for at least one week of taking your prescribed pain medication. Keep in mind that it takes time for any type of mouth soreness or discomfort to heal, and there's also a variety of factors such as chewing habits, diet, and jaw movement, that can affect how quickly an extraction site heals.
