Dental Crown

A dental crown being placed in a mouthDental crowns are an excellent option for those who have a tooth that is severely damaged or decayed. At Highridge Dental Care, we have found one of the best applications for crowns is that they can be used as a way to cover up braces, caps, or fillings. Crowns will completely mask the imperfections of your teeth, so you'll be able to smile confidently without worry.

What Is A Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a restoration that covers the tooth and helps it to function in your mouth as if nothing ever happened. The dental crown is made of metal, porcelain, or plastic that covers the tooth and is attached to your original tooth. The dentist will use an impression from the teeth they want to cover and give it to the dental laboratory in order to make your new crown. A temporary type of dental crown can help protect a weak or damaged area until the lab has completed a perfect replacement with a crown that fits perfectly over your tooth.

How Can You Tell If You Need A Dental Crown?

Dental crowns are used to treat tooth decay, or when there is too much space due to the loss of one of your teeth. You can tell if you need a dental crown by inspecting your mouth and looking for signs that show damage such as chipped, discolored, fractured, or missing teeth. Our dentist will do what is called an oral exam where they look at all of your teeth from the inside out, with their hands and tools in order to find any weaknesses in them. A dental assistant may help examine other parts of the mouth while they're doing this, including around the gums which also have tissue structures called root surfaces; these act like anchors holding it down into the jawbone.

What Are The Risks Involved With Getting A Dental Crown?

There are very few risks involved with getting a dental crown, the most common being that it may not fit properly. This is usually just an issue of adjusting the size or shape of the tooth after you get your teeth cleaned and prepared for having a dental crown placed on them. Other minor risks include small amounts of bleeding when first wearing your new crown. This can occur if any material from inside the tooth gets pushed out under pressure (which can be prevented by using antibiotic paste), or if you have sensitive gums around where we put in the temporary filling.
